I’m not a technical
person, so explain how your IP service works in the simplest
terms possible.
“Internet Protocol,”
commonly referred to as “IP,” allows you to make telephone
calls using a broadband Internet connection instead of a regular
phone line. Our service plans offer many features at great prices.
The service requires the use of either an analog telephone adapter,
commonly called an “ATA,” or a dedicated IP phone. An
ATA connects to a broadband device such as a DSL line, cable modem
or a router. The ATA has a standard telephone jack that allows you
to plug in most conventional telephone equipment. Using an ATA allows
you to enjoy a high speed connection using your existing telephone
equipment. A dedicated IP phone is a device that connects directly
to a broadband device such as a DSL line or a router. A dedicated
IP phone is solely designed for IP service. You make and receive
calls just as you would with traditional telephone service and receive
many additional features.
What are the advantages of
using IP?
Greater control over your service
features. You have the control to administer the service features
of your account from a private Web site. Many also find the feature-rich
service to be less expensive than traditional phone service. Your
IP telephone number can even travel with you (provided there is
compatible broadband access).
Is IP service a replacement
for my existing telephone line?
Possibly. You would need to be
comfortable with regard to the differences between IP service and
those provided by your traditional telephone service: 911 Services
may not be available via your IP service in all areas. Customer
premise equipment is powered by the AC power in your business. If
the power went out, your IP service would be out as well. (Some
customers choose to plug their premise equipment, router and broadband
device into a UPS to provide power for a limited time in the event
of a power failure.) IP service requires broadband connectivity.
Should your broadband connection go down, your IP phone service
would not function.
What equipment do I need
to use my IP service?
A broadband connection. Either
an analog telephone adapter (ATA) or a IP phone (software or hardware
based). Additionally, you might wish to have a router to support
multiple computers on a local area network.
Is there a difference in
quality between IP phones and ATA devices?
Typically the decision about
whether to go with IP phones or ATAs is a question of economics.
If you already have compatible analog phones, ATAs may be the less
expensive option.
